Researchers from the Institute for Archaeological Jayapura, Suroto Day, Sunday (04/03/2011), said that the megalithic sites were discovered on the shores of Lake Sentani.

According to him, in prehistoric times, trust in the natural forces that control life is very influential in Kampung Ayapo. This is evidenced by the presence of four stone mortars which serves to the interests of religious ceremonies.

The power emitted by nature or by the ancestral spirits who have died, is expected to be obtained through megalithic objects, and through this stone mortars also ancestral spirits are expected to provide welfare to those who are still alive.

While every step of the population in farming and fishing in Lake Sentani, preceded by ceremonies that use these stone mortars.

This megalithic confidence, he continued, developed in the Neolithic period with the characteristics of its people living farming. Megalithic tradition in Papua have influences from Southeast Asia and the Pacific, he said.

He said the presence of megalithic sites in the village of New Ayapo can be used as a tourist attraction with respect to the value of archaeological and cultural heritage that must be protected and passed on to future generations. [ant]
